When I started working within the Support to Live at Home Service in 2013, I really had little idea of what the job would involve having come from working with younger adults with dementia. Since that day in October eight years ago I have learnt so much and every day spent at work is filled with laughter, challenges and triumphs.

When a customer attends a GP appointment, I am there to act as an advocate. When they want to attend a disco, I am there to help them choose what outfit they want to wear. When they want to go on holiday, I am there to help them choose where to go and then arrange it all. When a customer is not able to make themselves understood and heard, I am there standing beside them, acting as an amplifier of their wishes.

I sit with them in coffee shops people watching and talking about tonight’s telly. I help them buy all their Christmas presents and then help wrap them, I sit with them and watch the news then discuss what we’ve seen and why it’s happened. I help them to remember to take their medication and to do their housework and look through old photo albums with them and talk through their memories. I wish them sweet dreams and they say a cheerful good morning in return the next day. Most importantly, I ask customers how they would like us to support them and then write this down so that everyone supports them in a way that they choose. That’s the Leading Lives way.

You have probably seen me in town with a customer and not realised, possibly thinking it was just two friends out in town for the day. Doesn’t sound like work, does it? Well, it is, and the kind that will really give you as much as you give to it.

If you’re not sure if the role of support worker is right for you, see how many of the questions below you can say yes to. If it’s three or more, then this is the job for you!

  1. Do you have a ‘can-do’ attitude?
  2. Do others come to you for help and advice?
  3. Do you find a way around a challenge or problem?
  4. Do you have more to give than others see in you?
  5. Would you like to gain accredited qualifications?
  6. Can you work as part of a team and on your own?

If this sounds like you then you are like us, and we would love you to join us! Why not give Leading Lives a call and see if there is a role for you? Or browse our vacancies page and start a career with a company that is run by the employees and where we make the difference!
