With support from a team member, one of our customers has recently secured a volunteering post at the local library.
This came about through their weekly visits to the library to complete puzzles, an activity which he loves to do. He often commented on how much he enjoys going to the library as it is very peaceful and quiet. He became well known to the staff through his love of puzzles and they even started to put puzzles aside that they thought he would enjoy. After chatting with him over his visits and talking to him about the different uses of a library and how it differs from a book shop, it became apparent that he would enjoy the opportunity to be able to volunteer at the library.
After talking to the library manager and a couple of emails between her and the Supported Independence team leader, an application form was filled out by him and his Mum, with the team leader and team members as referees.
The next steps were an informal meeting with the library manager, in which she went through the role of being a volunteer, the volunteer hand book, how the library was set out and any adjustments they could make for him. He was then issued his volunteer badge and has started his role, volunteering for 2 hours a week!
All the staff at the library have been so accommodating and flexible over his working patterns and he is thoroughly enjoying his new role.
He said “I enjoy finding the right place to put each book back when a customer returns it and I also enjoy having a tea break in the staff room and chatting with the other staff members.”
His Mum also added “It has given him so much confidence, he is happier in himself as he feels he is contributing to the community and helping other people.”
